Greetings East Iowa Ski Club members. The February EISC Valentine’s Hearts Out to Marty and Janet meeting was pretty moving for me. We acknowledged the loss of our friend and club president with some PowerPoint slide memories of a few of the activities we shared with Marty over the years. Marty was an integral part of the club for many years and will be greatly missed. We all need to appreciate the amount of work he did and the direction he provided. I will move into the president’s role for the next few months.
This was also the election meeting. Thank you to Lori Huff and Cathy Dick for running the election. The board election representative, Rosanne Van Cura, was with them in spirit, while enjoying a well-deserved Caribbean cruise vacation. Thanks to all of the members who voted at the meeting and who sent in their ballots, and a big thank you to the six candidates who ran for the volunteer board. We need members every year to volunteer to lead the club by serving on the board. We will have the election results at the March meeting. A new board will be established in April.
The Winter Park Ski Trip will run from March 1 to March 8. Trip Leader Kathy Takes had a short planning meeting before the member meeting. We are looking forward to staying at the ‘ski in/ski out’ Zephyr Lodge right on the mountain. It seems like we just returned from a very fun Steamboat ski trip. Thanks to Chip and Diane Scholl for their work organizing and leading the Steamboat trip. The trip surveys indicated they did an exceptional job on this one. Thanks to Tim Gull and Lori Huff for reporting on the Midwest skiing and winter adventure trip staying in Stillwater, Minnesota. It sounds like the folks who were able to attend had a great time skiing and enjoying the city. Well, except for our Minneapolis member and friend, Steve Sartori who misjudged his room to stop, fell and messed up his knee. We all wish Steve a speedy recovery.
Most of the meeting was spent on discussing the upcoming Adventure Trip. Marty campaigned hard for the club to go on more Adventure travel trips after back problems ended his skiing. He was sure the EISC members wanted to do more of the Adventure trips and wanted to get more members involved. I took the position that it would draw people away from our ski trips. We were both right. However, the club has gone on some great Adventure trips the past few years and Adventure Trip Coordinator Rosanne Van Cura has several more in process. The May 14th Texas bus trip is almost full. Trip Leader, Cathy Dick reported we are at the minimum, but could add a couple more. Diane Scholl told us the EISC’s September 3rd Cosmos Highlights of Ireland and Scotland Tour of 2026 only has two more openings. This one sounds like a special adventure.
We had updates on bicycle/camping trips; hockey & baseball game outings; the July 11th Marty Stimson Memorial golf outing at Fawn Creek in Anamosa. It is gratifying to be part of such a cool and busy club. We are all lucky to be members of the EISC.
The next meeting will be March 21st at the Knights of Columbus. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the next EISC event.
