Sales were brisk at the Corn Roast for the 32 spots for the Beaver Creek ski trip.

(It was incorrectly advertised as a 26 spot trip in the previous newsletter.) There is currently one spot available for this trip. We would highly suggest that anyone who is interested and hasn’t signed up yet to snag that last spot. We are also establishing a waiting list. Lots of things can happen in the next 5 months that could affect those who are signed up. The cancellation date is Saturday, October 20. For those of you making monthly payments the next payment is due at the season Kickoff event, September 15, or sending a check to the club PO Box by that date or on-line with a credit card payment.

There are 9 individuals planning to fly. In order to get the group rate we were quoted we need to have a minimum of 10 people flying. I know a couple of individuals were uncertain of their transportation status with sign up. If you are willing to change your status to someone who flies out, please let 1 of the trip chairs know. A nearly 13 hour road trip for most requires a hotel night in western Nebraska which adds additional costs and time being gone.

Flights will be on United Airlines from Cedar Rapids to Denver. Coach transportation of 3 hours will get us to our lodging at Borders Lodge where we will have 4 person occupancy in 2 bedroom, 2 bath condos. The condos have ski-in, ski-out access to the Elkhorn Lift.  Vail Resort/Beaver Creek Adult Lift passes are 5 of 6 days. An additional day can be purchased for $70 if ordered in advance.

Initial payment with sign-up on 8/4 must be paid by check. The web site on-line registration will open on Monday, August 6 at 9 AM. This will be done to prevent possible overbooking of the trip

It is highly recommended that you purchase Travel Insurance. There are several companies out there that provide that service. Ski.com suggests Trippreserver.com  The web site has a list of FAQs that answer many common questions. Since many of us have pre-existing conditions, if you wish a waiver to cover that condition you MUST MAKE THE PURCHASE WITHIN 21 DAYS OF YOUR INITIAL PAYMENT FOR THE TRIP. For most of us that deadline will be 8/24/2018. Cost of the insurance is about 6% of the trip cost. Contact information for the carrier, Red Sky Insurance, is on the Trippreserver web site.

The EISC announced the first major West trip this year and it is a special one.  For the week of January 26th through February 2nd 32 EISC members will be traveling to Beaver Creek, Colorado for a week of skiing and fun at this exceptional resort.  We are happy to announce that the Trip Leaders and your hosts for the week are Kathy Takes and Ruth Van Tol.  The trip will go on sale at August 4th EISC Corn Roast at Marty and Janet Stimson’s farm, near Center Point.

Once you’ve left behind Colorado’s main I-70 thoroughfare of the Rockies and passed through Beaver Creek’s natural gateway, you’ll be greeted by an overall top-shelf atmosphere with picture-perfect ski runs and a quaint, but polished Bavarian-style village with escalators.  While some resorts excel at providing terrain specific for a certain type of skier, Beaver Creek has something to everyone. First-timers to the most aggressive skiers will feel like this mountain was made for them.

Beaver Creek is known as a “World Cup Mountain” because the annual World Cup men’s downhill race and several women’s World Cup events are held on its Birds of Prey run & on the Grouse Mountain runs. The skiing at Beaver Creek is right in line with the resort’s specialty: world-class experiences. Some steep, wide-open, blue runs, like those found underneath the Grouse Mountain and Birds of Prey chairlifts are favorites of intermediate skiers.  Beginners flock to the left side of the mountain, where the Drink of Water chairlift allows novices to get up on the mountain, enjoy scenic views of the surrounding mountains and take long runs to the base village.  The new Centennial Gondola from Dopplemayr alternates a high speed 6 pack chair for faster skiers with the 10 person gondola for those who want the more relaxed pace.  Everyone can end the day with fresh, homemade chocolate chip cookies, served daily at 3 p.m. at the base.  No matter what your skiing ability, you can rest assured that the resort is doing everything in its power to make Beaver Creek skiing as safe as possible; they were awarded the National Ski Area Association’s Best Overall Safety Award.

While Beaver Creek ski area appears to be a seamless groomed mountain, it is actually 3 connected ski areas Beaver Creek, Bachelor Gulch and Arrowhead, each with their own village.

The EISC will be staying at the Borders Lodge, near Beaver Creek Village.  The Borders Lodge provides ski-in, ski-out access to the Elkhorn Lift at Beaver Creek Ski Resort. In addition to enjoying convenience to the slopes, guests of The Borders Lodge can take in gorgeous views of the resort to the south and the rolling, snowy fairways of the Beaver Creek Golf Course to the north.  Accommodations at The Borders Lodge are 2 bedroom / 2 bath condos, and offer features such as a fireplace, balcony and in-unit washer and dryer. Guest amenities also include an outdoor pool, two hot tubs, a fitness center, and underground parking.

Beaver Creek features 300 days of sunshine, 1,825 acres of Colorado terrain, much of it groomed to perfection. The grandeur of the large mountain is contrasted with the closeness of the alpine village, but heated walk-ways and escalators to the slopes and around the village make it oh so easy to enjoy the aprés ski (warm cookies are a trade mark), the mouth-watering cuisine, blissful spas and captivating performing arts.
